Review by Alistair Massey
Enthusiastic and thankful applause in a well-filled Town Hall gained a bonus of
encores in Inverurie Music's Gala Concert on Good Friday. This featured the Chamber
Philharmonic Europe or Kammerphilharmonie Europa, a group of young musicians from
eighteen European nations based in Cologne. Their leader was Pawel Zuzanski (violin)
from Poland and other soloists were Fédor Roudine (violin) and Kirill Gusarov
(trumpet) from Russia. Their performance was a rousing and memorable end to Inverurie
Music's season of concerts for 2012–2013.
The concert in Inverurie was one of twelve in the second part of the orchestra's
UK tour that included many comparatively remote locations, including one (helped
by a generator!) on the Isle of Arran. Before Inverurie the orchestra was in Thurso
and they are to be praised for their recovery from a journey that was delayed by
unforeseen road works. Next the orchestra will perform in Birnam, Perthshire and
it will complete its tour at Rhosygilwen Mansion in Wales.
The music was largely Baroque in flavour with pieces by Vivaldi, Corelli and J. S.
Bach, seasoned with a twist of later composers: a Trumpet Concerto by Ponchielli
and two favourites of the romantic era — Fauré's Pavane and
Grieg's Holberg Suite. The Baroque pieces were marked by confidently clear
and rhythmic lines that engaged the listener in the contrapuntal texture. The famous
double violin concerto by Bach that ended the first half was a polished performance
with sensitive balance in the slow Largo movement and racy outer movements,
including the exciting jig-like final Allegro.
The second half was highlighted with a serene rendition of Fauré's Pavane.
This was gently and subtly handled by the cello in its most lyrical register. The
final Holberg Suite, which is a group of pieces based on old dance forms,
was also tackled sensitively, particularly in the Sarabande and Air.
However, there was no lack of gusto for the final Rigaudon, which was taken
at break-neck speed. In response to the audience's cheers for more, the orchestra
played a Latin American number with a fine trumpet solo as a contrast and some jazzy
humorous pieces.
The next season of Inverurie Music's concerts will run from Autumn 2013. To find
