Review by Alistair Massey

Delmege Quartet

The Delmege Quartet, an award-winning young ensemble with Aberdeenshire connections, gives the world premiere of a new quartet by local composer John Hearne celebrating the centenary of Gavin Greig, collector of traditional fiddle music.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
String Quartet in D minor, K.421

John Hearne
In Search of Strathspey

Johannes Brahms
String Quartet No.3 in B flat, Op.67

John Hearne's new piece In Search of Strathspey, which will be premiered by the Delmege Quartet in this concert, is a whimsical comment on the 'cross-over' between classical and folk styles.

It begins in deeply serious and solemn mood; but one of the players (2nd violin) soon becomes impatient for something more lively and begins to suggest snatches of 'Scotch snap' rhythmic figures. This intially annoys the other players, but they are eventually persuaded to lighten the mood and soon the whole quartet is playing a Strathspey and Reel in the style of Scott Skinner!

The piece is intended to celebrate the centenary of Gavin Greig, a collector and champion of the traditional fiddle music of North-East Scotland.

John Hearne

John Hearne has lived in Scotland since 1970. For a time he taught music in Iceland, and for 17 years was a lecturer at Aberdeen College of Education. He was the first Chairman of the Scottish Society of Composers, and was the Chairman of the Scottish Music Advisory Committee of the BBC from 1986 to 1990. He is now a free-lance composer, singer, conductor and translator. In 2004 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Music (D.Mus.) from the University of Wales, the first time this degree has been conferred in more than thirty years. The award was based on a portfolio of his compositions.

This event is supported by Aberdeenshire Council as part of its Be Part of the Picture programme.
